Routine Makeup How-To

Welcome back!

This morning, I recorded myself as I was doing my normal, everyday makeup routine for work. I really wanted to film my routine after sharing my blog post on my makeup must-haves. Unfortunately, the lighting was poor in my bathroom, so when I got home after work, and the rain had just stopped, I moved my makeup chair towards the window and refilmed. Much better!

I will say though, I also tried to record my flat iron curls... fail!  The video didn't come out quite right. Crazy part, half of it had fallen by the time I filmed this how-to; you can see that my hair is flat on one side. lol.

Anyway, I am calling this a how-to versus a tutorial since I'm not teaching you anything, I'm just showing you how I do my daily makeup. Hope this is useful or inspiring. Maybe if you weren't sure about how I use my products, you'll at least see how I use it, even if it may not be correct. ;)

Black and Red Gradient Nail Tutorial (Miami Heat Inspiried)

Done! With the Miami Heat in the Finals and them being my husbands favorite team, I felt compelled to support and do a black and red nail design. Originally, I created a Red, Black and White marble look, but after different combinations, I couldn't get the colors to come out opaque enough. Hope you enjoy!

MyGlam vs Birchbox - June 2012 Edition +Birchbox Product Review

As promised, here is my product review for the Birchbox after getting the chance to really test ou the products.
Hope you enjoy!

MyGlam vs Birchbox - June 2012 Edition

+Birchbox Product Review

MyGlam versus Birchbox for June 2012

Between the two, I prefer MyGlam. Although the Birchbox products are all higher brand products, the selection was not appealing to me. MyGlam typically has 1-2 deluxe items, and the rest tend to be cheaper, but the 1-2 items have been worth the $10.

June 2012 Birch Box Review

Overall, I was very disappointed in the Birchbox for this month. I expected more makeup related items, or at least larger sample sizes. I did cancel my subscription the day after, but reinstated it to give it another chance. I will cancel it for sure if next month is another disappointment.

tili Bags Small Collection

Cute zip-lock bag, but I think they are overpriced and not very useful. It's a nice idea, but not worth the money.

Georgie Beauty Winks by Georgie

Cute lashes, flexible, perfect length. No better than the Sonia Kashuk lashes that I adore though. The only thing worthy of the Birchbox.

theBalm cosmetics Stainiac

Works well as a lip stain, but it's a bit too red for my preference. I wouldn't wear it alone, and so it's not something I would re-purchase.

LA FRESH Eco-Beauty Oil-Free Face Cleanser

This works better than makeup remover wipes because they don't leave a residue after use like other wipes, but it isn't better than a face cleanser. For those who travel and require a quick face clense and don't have the option to wash their face, this would be a great product, but if you don't have that unique need, it's not great.

Hot Pink/Gray Marble Nail Tutorial

Just did a new nail tutorial video on a 4 point marble nail pattern, requested by my friend Haley! I originally planned on doing a dark gray and baby pink swirl, but the baby pink polish I had was too sheer and came out too milky. I redid it with hot pink, but the design still turned out dark. Please feel free and use whatever colors you prefer for this look. Experiment with colors and layers to get your desired look.

Will do another marble tutorial for the 4th, so stay tuned for more marble tutorials!

Hope you enjoy!

Items Used/Mentioned In The Video

  • Base Coat - *Gelous, Advanced Nail Gel Coat
  • Gray Nail Polish - *China Glaze 652 Recycle 80831
  • Hot Pink Nail Polish - *wet n wild Wild Shine 4540 Lavender Creme
  • Top Coat - *Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
  • Small cup/bowl/vessel with room temperature water
  • Tape
  • Q-tips
  • Orange Stick or Tooth Picks
  • Napkin or Paper Towel
  • Nail Brush

Other Notes Regarding The Video

The Scotch Tape portion of the video was hard to capture. If you were unable to understand the video, there are screenshots of how to tape your fingers in my Mint/Purple Marble Design Tutorial.

In the tutorial, I show you how to do a marble for one nail. The final result shows a two-finger dip of the middle and ring finger. When dipping two fingers, you want to make sure you dip them at the same time, and both parallel to the water like the single finger. If you happen to dip them unevenly, you may result in a poor or altered marble design.

♥Birchbox | June 2012 Unboxing♥

So... if you follow me on Facebook, you know that I was supposed to get my MyGlam on Tuesday and Birch Box on Thursday. This meant there would be time to do a marble nail tutorial in between on Wednesday.

Instead, I got MyGlam on Monday and Birch Box today (Tuesday). Which leaves the marble tutorial for Wednesday (or Thursday).

Also, I originally recorded on our newer camera in my work clothes, but it auto-focused like crazy, so I re-filmed with our older camera, but the audio had ringing in the background, so I went with the auto-focus. I figured you'd rather watch me blur in and out than listen to ringing noise for 6 minutes.

Hope you enjoy!

♥MyGlam | June Unboxing and Review♥

It's official! My third YouTube video, and this time, face-to-face. No hiding behind the voice over ;) However, I am looking at the mirror behind the view finder instead of directy into the camera, so it looks like I'm looking up instead of straight. And, again, my camera decided to auto-focus. Most of it was edited out and it's tolerable. Still not sure how to fix that without just purchasing a new camera.

Also, I was sitting in front of the window trying to film in natural light, but with such dark backgrounds, the light washed out my face until closer to the end. More lessons learned for me. Hope you enjoy!

June MyGlam Bag Review

What's In My Glam Bag?

  • LIVING PROOF frizz Nourishing Styling Cream
  • Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer
  • NYX Round Lipstick in Saturn 606
  • Marbella Permanent Eyeliner Pen

Quick Review

LIVING PROOF frizz Nourishing Styling Cream

I really like this product. It is clean, and not sticky or oily. It works well at reducing frizz and actually keeping hair really soft, almost like a hair serum. It has a nice light sent and very light weight. Would use again, may even repurchase.

Philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer

This felt really luxurious, soft, creamy. Absorbs well, not liquidy or runny. Have not tried on my face, will try first thing tomorrow. I've used other Philosophy products before, so I look forward to this.

NYX Round Lipstick in Saturn 606

I was not a fan of this color. It made my teeth look white, but I do like the formula and consistency. Went on very smooth and very pigmented.

Marbella Permanent Eyeliner Pen

I really like this eyeliner. I would use it on a daily basis. It is not as long wearing as I would hope. It did wash off very easily for a wtaerproof formula, in my opinion. Also, by the end of the video, the swatch I had done on camera had already faded. Also, the felt tip is thicker than most, so it is not as good at producing thinner/finer lines.

Purple Polka Dot Tip Nail Tutorial

Done! Tutorial has been re-filmed and edited with voice over complete! Hope you enjoy!

Purple Polka Dot Tip Nail Tutorial

Items Used/Mentioned In The Video

  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Base Coat - *Gelous, Advanced Nail Gel Coat
  • Light Purple Nail Polish - *Confetti 071 Belle of the Ball
  • Dark Purple Nail Polish - *wet n wild megalast Disturbia (217B)
  • Top Coat - *Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
  • Dotting Tool... or bobby pin, back of a needle, tooth pick, end of a makeup brush
  • Small Brush

Other Notes Not Mentioned in The Video

I decided to use a bobby pin versus a dotting tool because I only own one dotting tool. The dotting tool I have is for smaller dots or for drawing patterns. The bobby pin provided larger dots for this look.
I also want to mention that the photo below is of my left hand, which I had done the day before, while the hand in the video is of my right. I had to redo my right hand after seeing that the first round of filming didn't turn out and because the acrylic on my thumb nail broke off the following day of painting.
The pictures on the YouTube thumbnail are from both left and right hands from the first round of painting and were enhanced with Instagram.

PREVIEW: Purple Polka Dot Nail Tip Tutorial

After posting my first YouTube video yesterday, I really wanted to do another video.... luckily, I change my polish every 4-5 days and my marble nails were growing out, so it was about time to switch out my polish. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you'll know that I've changed out my polish and just filmed a new tutorial....

The only issue I have is that the video didn't come out quite right. :(

I'm going to re-film and edit tonight. Of course, this will mean that the video will not have the same exact look (since I will have to remove polish from one hand to start over) as the photos above, but it will be the same design. Hopefully I'll be able to do the voice over tonight as well. If not, I'll do it tomorrow. I plan to have it posted to YouTube on Saturday. At the latest, it'll be up Sunday.

As soon as it is posted, I will let you know on Facebook and here on my blog!

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the tutorial!

Wavy Curls Hair Tutorial

Welcome back!

A few days ago, I recorded my first video in hopes of posting my first YouTube video. The following day, I realized not only was I sitting too close to the camera, but my camera has an auto-focus function that kept focusing when I didn't want it to. So that same day, I did a new video. This time, with more issues, but I got through it. My apologies for the throat clearing and the awkward pauses. This was my first tutorial, first time using Windows Live Movie Maker, and first time doing a voice recording, so there's a lot of inconsistencies... and I was pretty nervous. I did the voice over on the fly, so a lot of my comments weren't fully thought through as I was speaking. ;)

~If you're interested in the back story of how this all came together, I'll include it at the bottom.~

MY WAVY CURLS

Items Used/Mentioned In The Video

  • Conair Professional Paddle Brush (Walgreens)
  • Conair Styling Essentials Salon Clips (Walgreens)
  • Rattail Comb (Walgreens)
  • Babyliss Pro Ceramic Curling Iron (1") (Amazon.com, can be purchased at flatironexperts.com as well)
  • Angry Birds T-shirt... lol (Target)

Things I Forgot To Mention

I realized after the fact, there were a few things I wanted to mention in the video....
  1. Any brand product works for this look, the tools I used are what I have, but you can use whatever you prefer.
  2. I have course, stubborn, Asian hair, so use your own discretion with your curling iron in terms of temperature and duration of curling time per strand.
    1. I use my curling iron on the highest temperature (430), but most of you will not need it that high
    2. I hold for 8-10 seconds for each wrap, and I wrap one strand of hair about 3 times (top, middle, tips). Depending on your hair, you may be able to hold for 5 seconds per wrap and get the same effect.
  3. I like to have 'old' hair, not to be confused with dirty hair, when curling to get a better hold.
  4. If you want larger curls, use a larger barrel, if you want tighter curls, use a smaller barrel
  5. I don't like to use a lot of hair products unless necessary. Since this was a tutorial, I didn't bother with hairspray. For longer wear, I like to use a flexible hairspray at the end.
  6. My hair is layered, which is why I prefer to curl my hair in sections.
  7. It typically takes me 20-25 minutes to curl my hair. The video itself was 30 minutes before cropping and editing.

First Video.... the Back Story

For a while now, I have been wanting to create a YouTube tutorial but didn't know what my first video should be on. While sitting around at home, while the hubby was out watching the Heat game, I decided it was going to be on how I curl my hair. I was so excited, I immediately started curling and recording. The next day, I watched about 30 seconds of the video and realized it was a FAIL. I was sitting too close to the camera, so the top of my head and the tips of my hair were cut off. Not only that, but our camera has this great auto-focus feature, unfortunately, it was auto-focusing every time I moved.

I pulled out my old Canon PowerShot a640 digital camera the following day and decided to redo the video. I was determined and made sure to check the video to ensure I was better placed in the frame. Luckily this camera doesn't have an auto-focus for video recording. However, I came across other issues....
  • it can only record videos 10 minutes at a time
  • the battery died 1/3 of the way into curling
  • close to the end of filming, the memory card was full (forgot to empty it of my failed video before starting the new one)
  • FLORIDA HUMIDITY... while clearing the memory card onto my computer, I helped the hubby walk the dogs, but it was crazy humid and so my bottom section of curls began to straighten out
After all of this, 8 video clips later, I got to learn how to make a 'movie'. I used Windows Live Movie Maker from Windows 7. It's pretty nice. I like it better than the Windows Movie Maker from previous Windows versions. It was really easy to use to crop, edit, combine, etc. Took a bit to figure out how to add music and a voice over, and how to record the voice over. Was a great learning experience and hopefully it'll be easier the next time around.

Lessons Learned

  • test out your camera before you waste 30 minutes of recording
  • make sure your batteries are charged
  • empty out your memory card before recording long videos
  • make sure you're in the frame of the shot
  • jot down notes before you begin your voice over
  • BE PATIENT and prepare
Thanks for watching!

My Daily Makeup Must Haves

Welcome back!
Today I wanted to share the makeup products that I use on a daily basis. I know that many of you already wear makeup, and this blog post may not be of any use. However, if you use makeup or want to start using makeup, but you're not sure if you're missing something or just want to try something different, I wanted to at least put my list out there.

I rarely leave the house without makeup, and these are the products I use everyday.

LET'S GET STARTED

*All the products listed below were purchased with my own money. Many of these products were purchased from Sephora and Walgreens.

First and foremost, I have combination skin. Most of the skin on my face is dry and sensitive, but I have a lot of spots that tend to get very oily. When it comes to purchasing products, I tend to lean towards the dry/sensitive group if combination is not an option and deal with the oil in other ways. So, if you have all over oily skin, these products may not work for you.

Primer:

After washing, toning and moisturizing my face, I like to apply primer around my nose, under my eyes, on my forehead and under my bottom lip (chin area). I don't use primer every where. I only use primer primer where I need it.... in the oily spots to prevent them from getting oilier and causing my makeup to smudge, and on the dry spots to smooth out any flakiness that make my foundation appear cakey, flaky and/or crusty. If you have dry skin, you know what I mean.

Concealer:

Next, I use a concealer. This concealer stick looks like a lipstick and can be purchased at various drug stores. The first time I used it, I hated it. When you swipe it on, it goes on smooth, but looks chalky. I tried blending it with a concealer brush and with my Beauty Blender, and it didn't work :( Once I put my foundation on, the foundation would dry out and turn cakey/flaky. However, I saw a YouTube video where a girl was raving about it. She used her fingers... Success! After that, I only use my fingers to blend this in and now it is my favorite. If you blend it well and use it with primer, it works wonderful on redness and blemishes. I use it around the corner of my nose, under my eyes and on any red or discolored spots.

Foundation:

After concealing, I put on foundation. I like to use my fingers or my Beauty Blender to blend. I tried to use drug store make up, but with my skin being quite dry, it all came out very flaky. The dry spots were so pronounced that I preferred going without makeup. I really like this foundation! I don't have that issue with this, especially with primer.

Powder:

Once I'm done blending, I finish it off with bareMinerals as a finishing powder. I sometimes use MUFE HD MicroFinish Powder, but now that it is summer, I like to use a pigmented powder versus a sheer or translucent powder to provide a tanner look. Also, the bareMinerals provides additional SPF while MUFE does not.

Eye Brows:

Next, I do my brows. I have very fine and small Asian eye brows that are not very defined, so I always fill in my brows. I LOVE this brow pencil. I have used brow powders and pencils from Maybelline, Clinique, SmashBox, and MUFE. Smashbox powder was my previous favorite until I found this. It is much more affordable, can be found in numerous drug stores and super easy to use and the brush on the end actually does a great job at blending out any harsh lines.

Eye Liner:

I go back and forth between the two eye liners listed. It just really depends on my mood, or if I need waterproof or long wearing eye liner. I like to do a small winged looked since I don't typically wear eye shadow unless I'm going out or when I have more time in the morning. Maybelline can be purchased at your local drug store or even grocery store, while Stila will need to be purchased online or at a beauty store, like Ulta or Sephora.

Mascara:

After eye liner, I curl my lashes with a 'heated' (regular curler heated with my blow dryer for 5 seconds) eyelash curler. Then I put on my mascara, top lashes only. I don't like mascara on the bottom since I wear contacts and it tends to get in my contacts that way. I LOVE this mascara. It is the only formula that does not weigh down my lashes. The waterproof formula is actually better, but waterproof mascara has ruined many pairs of contacts for me. So I only wear a waterproof formula when I wear my glasses.

Blush:

Right now I am using a discontinued Stila powder blush. I bought it on sale at Sephora. It's not my favorite, but it works. I used to use Victoria's Secret, which was perfect for me, but they changed their makeup line and no longer sell it. I don't like to go out without blush. After putting on all that foundation and powder, there is no color left on my face, so blush and/or bronzer help bring that color back.

So that's it!

That is my daily makeup bag. I also carry around chapstick and lip gloss every where I go. When we travel or do our quarterly road trip down to Miami, we try not too pack too heavy, but this is my go-to list of "cannot leave behind" make up products. I have a separate makeup bag for my makeup, a separate bag for my skin care products, and a 3rd bag for my hair care products (not including my blow dryer and straightener).

If you're interested in my skin care products or hair products, please leave a comment below, and I may do another post! If I get enough requests, I may even do a video. ^_^

Thanks for reading!

Mint/Purple Marble Design Tutorial

As most of you know, I have been getting really into nail art recently and have been trying new techniques each week. This is my second attempt at the marble effect and I wanted to share it.

LETS BEGIN!

PREP YOUR NAILS

Before I start any new nail design, I like to make sure that my nail bed is well taken care of and prepped before painting.
First, you want to remove any old nail polish completely. You then want to use a cuticle remover; any will do, I use Sally Hanson Gel Cuticle Remover. You can use whatever you prefer, but I like to use an orange stick or cuticle pusher to push back your cuticle and remove any excess skin/cuticle. After you've rinsed that all off, you can begin filing. *I prefer a squared nail.* Afterwards, begin buffing over the entire nail bed with a buffer. To complete the prep, wash yours hands to make sure any loose debris is clear from your nails.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Base Coat - *Gelous, Advanced Nail Gel Coat
  • Mint Nail Polish - *wet n wild megalast I Need a Refresh-Mint (218A)
  • Dark Purple Nail Polish - *wet n wild megalast Disturbia (217B)
  • Top Coat - *Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
  • Small cup/bowl/vessel with room temperature water
  • Tape
  • Q-tips
  • Orange Stick or Tooth Picks
  • Napkin or Paper Towel
  • Nail Brush (optional)
*All the products listed within this blog were purchased with my own money.

BASE COATS

First, apply a layer of your favorite base coat. If you're wondering why my nails are different colors and texture, it is because I am growing out and filing down old acrylic nails. I didn't want to remove them completely because my natural nail is damaged underneath.
Second, apply two coats of your mint nail polish. The pictures make the mint look sky blue, but in real life, it is a greenish-blue minty color.

TAPE YOUR FINGERS

Since we are dipping our nails into polish, you want to avoid having to remove tons of nail polish later by wrapping your finger in tape. For each finger, you will need 2 strips of tape.

  1. Wrap first piece of tape above the base of the nail, as close to the nail as possible without touching.
  2. Place the second piece of tape, centered on the tip of your finger, just below the tip of your nail.
  3. Wrap the loose ends of the tape along the side of your nail bed to cover each side.
  4. Wrap the rest of the tape behind the nail.

CREATE YOUR PATTERN

Using your small vessel of room temperature water, you're going to want to have both bottles of polish open. The technique is that you want your polish and the water to be similar temperatures. If the water is warm, the polish will be too dense and sink. If your water is cold, the nail polish will clump instead of spread out. ~TIP: when creating your pattern, work quickly as the polish will begin drying, resulting in bubbles or clumps within your pattern.
  1. Take your nail polish wand/brush, and let it drip into the center of the water. If the water is of the right temperature, it will spread out across the water. Do this again for the next color (it will spread out inside of the first color). Continue to do this until you start to form a bullseye.
  2. Repeat step 1 until you have 6 or more rings. I chose 8-10, alternating 4-5 drops of each color. Picture shows 10
  3. At this point, you can make any pattern you would like, but if you want the same pattern I used, then continue reading... using an orange stick or tooth pick, lightly dip the orange stick tip into the center and pull out 5 tips.
  4. Once you make a star shape, in between each tip, going from the outside in, do the same, pulling from the outer ring into the center.

BEGIN DIPPING

  1. With your nail bed parallel to the water, dip your nail straight into the pattern.
  2. While keeping your nail submerged, wait about 15-30 seconds to let the excess polish 'harden'. Take your orange stick or tooth pick and swirl it around the water to pick up the excess polish. The longer you let it harder, the easier it is to clean up. This is critical for keeping your pattern from messing up.
  3. Carefully take your nail out, trying not to touch the bottom or the sides. ~Haha, just made me think of the game operation.
  4. Repeat Steps 1-4 of "Create Your Pattern" again and repeat the dipping steps 1-3 for the rest of your nails. Depending upon the size of your water vessel, you can dip multiple fingers in at a time, but make sure they are not touching, are dipped at the exact same time, and both fingers are parallel to the water/pattern in order to get the best results.
  5. Carefully remove the tape from your fingers and use a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover to clean any polish that got onto your skin.
  6. Optional: if you want an even cleaner look, use a nail art brush dipped in nail polish remover and go along the cuticle to clean up any more polish.
